The spiral ganglion neurons (cochlear ganglion) sit in the modiolus of the cochlea, with bipolar cells sending peripheral processes to hair cells in the organ of Corti for sound transduction and central axons forming the cochlear nerve (part of CN VIII). They relay tonotopic auditory information to the cochlear nuclei in the brainstem.
