Humans have two sets of teeth: deciduous starting eruption around 6 months with 20 total—8 incisors, 4 canines, 8 molars—for primary chewing until about age 12 when exfoliated, and permanent 32 including 8 incisors for cutting, 4 canines tearing, 8 premolars grinding, 12 molars with third set wisdom teeth often impacted. Deciduous lack premolars and have thinner enamel, more bulbous crowns, while permanent feature roots resorbed in predecessors during replacement, with calcification beginning in utero for both but permanent buds forming alongside.
