Bones Of The Foot And Ankle

The foot and ankle form a complex system which consists of 28 bones, 33 joints, 112 ligaments, controlled by 13 extrinsic and 21 intrinsic muscles?. The foot is subdivided into the rearfoot, midfoot, and forefoot?.

Ankle Anatomy

The ankle joint, also known as the talocrural joint, allows dorsiflexion and plantar flexion of the foot. It is made up of three joints: upper ankle joint (tibiotarsal), talocalcaneonavicular, and subtalar joints. The last two together are called the lower ankle joint. The upper ankle joint is formed by the inferior surfaces of tibia and fibula, and the superior surface of talus. The lower ankle joint is formed by the talus, calcaneus, and navicular bone.

Bones of the Foot

The foot begins at the lower end of the tibia and fibula, the two bones of the lower leg. At the base of those, a grouping of bones form the tarsals, which make up the ankle and upper portion of the foot. The bones of the foot are organized into the tarsal bones, metatarsal bones, and phalanges.

1. Tarsal Bones: These include the talus and calcaneus, which form the ankle joint and the heel, and the navicular, cuboid, and three cuneiforms, which form the arch of the foot.
2. Metatarsal Bones: These are the long bones that connect the tarsals to the toes.
3. Phalanges: These are the small bones that form the toes. The great toe consists of two phalanges (proximal, distal), while the remaining four toes have three phalanges (proximal, middle, distal).

Joints of the Foot

The foot has several joints, including intertarsal, tarsometatarsal, metatarsophalangeal, and interphalangeal joints. The great toe has one interphalangeal joint, while the other four toes have two (proximal, distal) interphalangeal joints.

Muscles of the Foot

The foot has several muscles that allow movements like foot inversion, foot eversion, toe flexion, toe extension, toe abduction, and toe adduction. These include dorsal muscles (extensor digitorum brevis, extensor hallucis brevis), lateral plantar muscles (abductor digiti minimi, flexor digiti minimi brevis, opponens digiti minimi), central plantar muscles (flexor digitorum brevis, quadratus plantae, lumbricals, plantar interossei, dorsal interossei), and medial plantar muscles (abductor hallucis, adductor hallucis, flexor hallucis brevis).

In conclusion, the foot and ankle’s complex structure, consisting of numerous bones, joints, and muscles, allows for a wide range of movements and provides the necessary stability and flexibility for various activities such as walking, running, and jumping..

The strong muscles that move the ankle originate in the leg. The most well-known are the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles, which are the strong calf muscles that allow you to push up on your toes.
The anatomy of the foot is incredibly complex. This introduction to the anatomy of the foot and ankle will be very general and highlight the most relevant structures. The ankle joint or tibiotalar joint is formed where the top of the talus (the uppermost bone in the foot) and the tibia (shin bone) and fibula meet.

Diagram Ankle Injury Treatment

Treatment options for a torn ankle ligament. The first response of any ligament sprain is to apply first aid immediately after the injury. This should involve Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation (RICE).
Anatomy of an ankle sprain 1 Early motion. To prevent stiffness, your doctor or physical therapist will provide you with exercises… 2 Strengthening exercises. Once you can bear weight without increased pain or swelling,… 3 Endurance and agility exercises. Once you are pain-free, other exercises may be added,…
During the early phase of healing, it is important to support your ankle and protect it from sudden movements. For a Grade 2 sprain, a removable plastic device such as a cast-boot or air stirrup-type brace can provide support. Grade 3 sprains may require a short leg cast or cast-brace for 2 to 3 weeks.

Ankle Sprains Types

The 2 common types of ankle strains are inversion and eversion ankle sprains. Inversion sprain: This is the most common out of the three and typically occurs due to the outward rolling of the ankle and the inward turning of the foot. As a result, the outer ligaments (lateral ligament) of the ankle are stretched and torn. Eversion sprain:…

How to Identify The Types of Ankle Sprains The 2 common types of ankle strains are inversion and eversion ankle sprains. Inversion sprain: This is the most common out of the two and typically occurs due to the outward rolling of the ankle and the inward turning of the foot.

A sprained ankle can occur quite easily. Just a quick sideways or twisting movement is all it takes to sprain an ankle. Athletes aren’t the only ones at risk. Everyday activities can lead to an ankle sprain. An uneven surface or clumsy step can lead to this most common ankle injury.

Ankle Sprains Diagram

Anatomy of an Ankle Sprain. An ankle sprain occurs when the strong ligaments that support the ankle stretch beyond their limits and tear. Ankle sprains are common injuries that occur among people of all ages. They range from mild to severe, depending upon how much damage there is to the ligaments.

Patients who have a high ankle ligament tear usually will have pain just above the level of the ankle, thus a “high” ankle sprain. They may also have tenderness over the deltoid ligament if they have a Maisonneuve injury, as noted above. It is important to touch the area to assess whether pain is just around the lateral ankle ligaments or higher.

High ankle sprain: The ligament joining the two bones of the lower leg (tibia and fibula), called the syndesmotic ligament, is injured. A high ankle sprain causes pain and swelling similar to a true ankle sprain, but can take longer to heal.

Ankle Sprain Causes

A twisting force to the lower leg or foot can cause a sprain. The lateral ligaments on the outside of the ankle are injured most frequently. Reproduced from the Body Almanac @ American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 2003. Your foot can twist unexpectedly during many different activities, such as:

Causes of a sprained ankle might include: A fall that causes your ankle to twist. Landing awkwardly on your foot after jumping or pivoting. Walking or exercising on an uneven surface. Another person stepping or landing on your foot during a sports activity.

Injury or trauma-related ankle pain causes 1 Sprains, strains, and fractures: These are the most commonly reported causes of ankle pain. Any of these can happen if… 2 Achilles tendon rupture: The Achilles tendon attaches the calf muscle to the heel bone, known as the calcaneus. If this… More …

Ankle Ligaments

Ligaments of the ankle. Lateral ankle ligaments. The lateral side of the ankle has three supporting ligaments: the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL), the posterior talofibular ligament (PTFL) and the calcaneofibular ligament(CFL). The three ligaments are together called the Lateral Collateral Ligament Complex.
Keywords: Ankle anatomy, Lateral collateral ligament, Medial collateral ligament, Ankle impingement, Ankle sprain Introduction Despite the fact that the ankle ligaments are prone to injury during the fast majority of sports, literature focusing on the ankle ligaments is rare.
On the outer side of your foot, you have several ligaments. These include the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL). These help keep your ankle and foot steady when you walk. If you have had repeated ankle sprains or if you have certain foot deformities, your ligaments can start to get weak and loose.

Ankle Anatomy

There are a variety of anatomical structures that make up the anatomy of the foot and ankle (Figure 1) including bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, tendons, and nerves. These will be reviewed in the sections of this chapter.
The ankle joint is formed by the connection of three bones. The ankle bone is called the talus. The top of the talus fits inside a socket that is formed by the lower end of the tibia (shinbone) and the fibula (the small bone of the lower leg).
[edit on Wikidata] The ankle, or the talocrural region, is the region where the foot and the leg meet. The ankle includes three joints: the ankle joint proper or talocrural joint, the subtalar joint, and the inferior tibiofibular joint. The movements produced at this joint are dorsiflexion and plantarflexion of the foot.
